WordCamp US returns later this year as a hybrid event in southern California. This is a first for in-person events, since the event was canceled in 2020, and made virtual in 2021.
And this is not the WordCamp US you remember.
If you have attended a past WordCamp US event, you are in for a surprise this September. Here are the Top 10 things you need to know about WordCamp US.
#1 Tickets are limited to just 650 attendees. WordCamp US has stated, due to venue and production company flexibility and costs, WordCamp US 2022 will be a smaller hybrid conference. This will certainly result in a sold-out event and leave many unable to get tickets. Those unable to attend in-person will still be able to participate from the comfort of their laptops through the free virtual option.
#2 The venue is a hotel. The conference will take place in a hotel for the first time in WordCamp US history, and it’s no ordinary hotel either. A beloved San Diego landmark since 1953, the Town and Country Hotel has recently completed a multi-million dollar top-to-bottom transformation and introduced a host of new amenities. The venue is also conveniently located on Hotel Circle with many other hotels, restaurants, shops, and services within walking distance.
#3 Face masks are still in fashion. Mask restrictions have elapsed in California, but WordCamp US will keep a mask mandate during the event. After attending several conferences over the past year, we suggest everyone take this seriously for the sake of you and your fellow attendees’ health. The event also has testing and vaccination guidelines. WordCamp US’s Covid Policy can be found on their website.
#4 A diverse speaker pool. Out of hundreds of submissions, the 2022 programming team has curated a diverse speaker list from the WordPress Community. The team is also working to break barriers by supporting underrepresented speakers through financial support from companies like Cloudways.
#5 The Kim Parsell scholarship fund. The Kim Parsell scholarship provides financial assistance to a recipient to attend WordCamp US, including travel from the recipient’s home city, a hotel stay for the duration of the event, and a ticket to WordCamp US. The Kim Parsell scholarship will be awarded to someone who:
- Identifies as a woman
- Is a WordPress contributor
- Has never attended WordCamp US before
- Requires financial assistance to attend
#6 You don’t need a car to get around town. The WordCamp US 2022 venue is conveniently located on the San Diego Trolly Line. The trolley runs daily from the hotel to the pier, downtown, and other popular stops.
#7 You can contribute to the project at the event. Becoming an Open Source Volunteer is easy at WordCamp US. Sunday is Contributor Day, where you can meet the teams and learn how to start contributing to the project. Cloudways is a proud part of the Five for the Future program, and volunteers 5% of the WordPress division’s time to contribute to the project!
#8 The after party is on Saturday night. We still don’t know the theme of the after-party, but we can confirm that while the conference ends with contributor day on Sunday, the official after party will take place on Saturday the 10th.
#9 Matt Mullenweg is speaking. This should be no surprise, but Matt will not be doing the State of the Word talk at the event.
#10 Cloudways is attending. We can’t wait to meet mask to mask with the community! Cloudways is a proud sponsor of WordCamp US, and will be offering the WordPress community special events and some unique surprises.
WordCamp US will be held September 9th through the 11th at the Town and Country Hotel, San Diego, California.
